Three Simple Rules of Life

Stephen Hawking once said, “Showing up is half the battle.” This quote always stuck with me. It’s so simple that sometimes we forget the importance of the statement. You can’t be considered for the job if you don’t submit your resume. You can’t win the race if you are not entered. You can’t win the lottery if you don’t buy the ticket. There are a million metaphors here, but you get my point.

As a modern-day teenager, you have so many things that can distract you away from success. Cell phones, youtube videos, social media, video games… These things occupy your time and keep you from actually showing up to life. And, a well-lived life is one that engages with all of the possibilities of the day. Today can be filled with fun, joy, excitement or laughter. Today might be filled with sadness, grief, rejection or pain. No matter the outcome, today offers possibilities, and it is essential to engage the day. For today just might hold one of those lasting memories that makes life worth living. This has always been my outlook on life. I hope it is yours too.

So, when I saw this little Facebook post on the Three Simple Rules in Life, it once again reminded me of the importance of showing up, engaging and giving life a try. Everyone is uncomfortable, almost everyone is nervous and most are afraid. Of what? The unknown. The response. Rejection. The trick is to overcome these frailties of life, and do it anyway. Go for it. Give it a try. Have the courage to be bad at something. Because who knows, you just might be great at something. You just might get the job. You just might create something beautiful out of the day. Every day is a new chapter and you are the author.

High School Coach Goes All the Way to Supreme Court to Pray After Game

Joe Kennedy was an assistant football coach at Bremerton High School in Washington. After football games ended, he customarily kneeled on the turf and said a prayer. Some players would join him in his prayer and kneel with him. In 2015, the Bremerton School Board asked him to refrain from any demonstrative on-field prayer. Officials said they were concerned that tolerating Kennedy’s public post-game prayers would suggest government endorsement of religion, in violation of the separation of church and state. When Coach Kennedy did not conform to these standards, his contract was not renewed.

Coach Kennedy hired lawyers and took his case to the courts. He lost and appealed.  He lost and appealed… This process was repeated for 8 long years. The US Supreme Court agreed to hear the case in 2022 (they only hear about 100 cases each year), and on June 27, 2022, they delivered their 6-3 decision in favor of Coach Kennedy. The court ruled that the school district violated Kennedy’s First Amendment right. They declared that his personal religious observance could not be restricted by the government. Kennedy was reinstrated as an assistant football coach at Bremerton High School in 2023.

Joe’s Perspective: We have a federal government with checks and balances. In this case, the defendant believed that his rights were violated and took his case to the Supreme Court, the highest court in the land. The 9 judges heard the case and made a ruling, which sets a precedent that any coach or student can publically pray at public school sporting events. Prayer is protected by the Constitution. My guess is this ruling angered a lot of people. Likewise, a lot of people were thrilled by this outcome. As a neutral observer, I believe the Supreme Court provided the correct ruling. Coach Kennedy did not force others to join his prayer and he did not attempt to proselytize others. This feels like free speech, and therefore, it should not be infringed upon by a department of the government.

Intangibles Are More Important than Star Ratings

Earlier this season, unrated Duke played highly-rated Clemson. All the experts predicted another big win for Clemson.  After all, they have 39 5-star recruits on their roster and Duke only has 2 on their roster.  A total mismatch on paper. HOWEVER, the outcome of that game was Duke 28-Clemson 7.

Joe’s Perspective: This result shouldn’t be a shocker. Upsets happen all the time, at any level and in every sport. It’s why they play the games – because you never know.  Most of the time, the favored team wins. This is because the favored team has a lot of intangibles going for them. Things like culture, tradition, work ethic, humility… However, sometimes the intangibles favor the underdogs. Maybe the Duke coach (for example) built a strong culture. Maybe he has emphasized teamwork and sacrifice. Maybe those players work harder for that coach. This leads to a team working harder toward goals, which creates results that defy the odds.

As I said, this can happen in any sport at any level. For example, my daughter is a freshman on a cross-country team at a small school. They have no business being dominant in any sport. In many ways, they are on an island of misfit toys (Rudolph analogy). However, the coach has established a fun atmosphere that is based on team. Early in the season, they went on team outings and had team dinners. Games are a frequent part of their practices. Consequently, they developed a team identity based on support, kindness and trust.  There are no cliques. Seniors are friends with freshmen, even if they beat them in a race. This atmosphere created comfort for my daughter. Consequently, she wanted to work harder and perform better for her teammates. Each week she ran faster and faster, defying everyone’s expectations. The whole team is performing better than expected. Why? Because this team has intangibles that other teams don’t.

“He Does Not Deserve a Death Threat”

During the Colorado vs. Colorado State football game, Henry Blackburn (CSU) delivered a late hit on Travis Hunter (Colorado).  CSU was flagged for unnecessary roughness and Travis Hunter was injured on the play. This kind of play happens quite often in football. A defensive player runs hard to deliver a hit on an offensive player.  Sometimes the defensive player gets there too late and delivers a hit a split second after the play is over.  If this happens, referees call a penalty. Players understand that this is part of the game and it sometimes happens.

What we don’t often hear is the reaction from the fans. Some fans are overzealous and take things too far. They find the email address of the offending player and send nasty emails. Sometimes they post awful things on social media directed at the player. Sometimes these comments come in the form of death threats.

Coach Deion Sanders, head coach of the Colorado football team, heard about these death threats. In his press conference after the game, he tried to put this into a proper perspective.

“He does not deserve a death threat over a game. At the end of the day, this is a game. Someone must win, someone must lose. Everyone continues their life the next day. I’m saddened if there’s any of our fans on the other side of those threats. I would hope and pray not, but that kid was just playing to the best of his ability, and he made a mistake.”

Joe’s Perspective: Sports means a lot to many people in America. We identify with our teams. We take pride when they win and we suffer when they lose. We take things personally. We judge and we criticize from the outside.  We post on social media and call radio shows. However, fans should not be crossing lines. At a professional football game last week, a fan punched another fan and killed him in the stands… over a game. That’s just wrong. Likewise, fans should not be attacking players and placing death threats. Again, this is just wrong. I applaud Coach Sanders for setting the record straight and for publicly forgiving a player from the opposite team. I hope the fans that needed to hear these comments, heard them, loud and clear.

Sportsmanship on Display at X-Country Meet

At a cross-country meet in Wisconsin earlier this season, something unusual happened. With about a half-mile left in the race, Seppi Camilli, a runner from Marquette (MI) High School, made a bold move and broke free from several competitors from Stevens Point High School. He was in second place. However, with about 15 feet remaining in the race, Seppi stumbled and fell. Cooper Erickson, a sophomore at Stevens Point High School saw Seppi stumble. Instead of finishing, Cooper decided to help the fallen runner. Ethan Olds, a junior at Stevens Point High saw what was happening and he also stopped to help. Together, Cooper and Ethan helped Seppi to his feet and then assisted him to the finish line.

After the race, Cooper explained why he went back to help a competitor from another school: “I know our team has great respect for people that give their best efforts, and that’s what he did.  He just came up 10 feet short, so I think we both just kind of felt like that he deserved to finish that one.”

Ethan chimed in: “I knew exactly what kind of situation he was in and just thought that it would be really nice to help him out. I hope that people can take away from this that being a good person will always be more valuable than being on a podium, or being on a results sheet.”

On a Facebook Post, a Stevens Point Administrator wrote: “The sportsmanship shows the character that we aspire for all of our athletes and many have it! That character will serve them (and us) well after they are done competing and living in our communities!”

Joe’s Perspective: No one would have faulted these runners if they had run right passed the fallen runner. After all, the goal of competition is to do your best and beat the other team. However, the purpose of high school sports is greater than beating your opponent. If we really believe the term, “educational athletics” has real value, then we believe sports is supposed to teach us valuable life lessons that we can apply to other areas of our lives.  In this case, these Stevens Point runners teach us that there is something more important than winning. Terms like character, sportsmanship and kindness mean just as much.

Regardless of the sport you play, you might find yourself in a similar situation. When trying to decide what to do in that situation, remember the example set by these two runners and remember the cheers from the crowd who watched this selfless act. My guess is that these runners slept very well that night, knowing that they acted with such character at such an important moment.
